Barred Owl Facial Disc

Raising my camera in the direction of a calling woodpecker, I was surprised to see this male Barred only fifteen feet above. He likely watched my approach for hundreds of feet along an old logging road behind a marsh, as I focused on the brush below for spring Warblers without spotting him. He stayed for a few minutes, surveying the marsh for prey, but flushed as a reverberating military helicopter passed overhead.
